What's new in Toronto Life

Updates ship weekly. Suggestions and bugs: tell the mayor, or chat at City Hall.

  1. Home gear

    October 9, 2026

    • That 75-inch TV from Costco, the Napoleon barbecue from Canadian Tire and the IKEA haul now actually go home with you. Netflix hits harder, the balcony grill feeds the floor, and guests sit on furniture instead of the floor.
    • New at Costco: a Ninja air fryer, a TOTO bidet seat (warm water, no more toilet-paper panic) and a PS5. New at Canadian Tire: a squat rack and dumbbells. New at the Eaton Centre Apple Store: a bedroom studio with an SM7B.
    • Gear unlocks things to do at home: Work out (+fitness, no GoodLife contract), Gaming with the boys, and Record a track (+charisma). The downstairs neighbour has a broom and is not afraid to use it.
    • Your gear moves with you when you move. Own five pieces for the Nesting badge.
  2. City Council

    October 9, 2026

    • The Mayor now appoints a council: TTC Chair, Board of Health Chair, Infrastructure Chair and Budget Chief. You have to say yes; nobody is drafted into a 3-hour budget meeting.
    • Councillors draw $300 a day at City Hall and, every three days, issue a six-hour directive the whole city feels: half-fare Presto, extra Line 1 trains, cooling centres, park prescriptions, a pothole blitz, Open Streets on Yonge, CaféTO patios, or paying the city's invoices on time (+5% shift pay).
    • New mayor, new council. Every election clears the chamber.
  3. Coach Co.

    October 9, 2026

    • Run your own intercity coach line out of the Union Station Bus Terminal. Greyhound left Canada in 2021; the 401 still needs you.
    • Five coaches: a retired school bus that smells like orange slices, an ex-Greyhound Prevost with 1.4 million km, a Winnipeg-built MCI, a GO-style double-decker, and an electric one that charges while the driver gets a Tim's.
    • Nine corridors from Hamilton to Thunder Bay. Set your fare, service your coach, and every evening at 6pm the day's riders settle: fares in, diesel, drivers and terminal fees out.
    • Routes are shared with other players. Too many coaches on the Waterloo run? The cheapest, cleanest one gets the students.
    • Skip the mechanic and it breaks down on the 401 near Belleville, live on the news.
  4. Keep the lights on

    October 9, 2026

    • Hydro outages now hit home: no power means cold showers, cereal for dinner and reading an actual book by candlelight.
    • Canadian Tire Leslieville sells backup power: a power bank (Netflix survives), a generator (runs everything, drinks gas, annoys unit 1204) or a Powerwall with rooftop solar (silent, smug).
    • New winter event: the ice storm. December 2013 sends its regards.
    • Powerwall owners who host during a blackout get the whole street over. Only lit window on the block.
  5. Bring a friend

    October 9, 2026

    • Your @handle is now an invite code. Share torontolife.ai/signup?ref=you. When they finish moving in, they get $100 and you get $250.
    • Five friends makes you a Connector. Twenty-five, Mayor of the Group Chat. A hundred, the whole 6ix.
  6. Feeling rough

    October 9, 2026

    • You can get sick now: the flu off the 504, food poisoning from cold shawarma, a King West hangover, burnout, a sprained ankle on black ice.
    • Sick means shifts pay less and sleep does less. Sleep it off, hit a walk-in clinic (free, long wait), the ER (free, longer wait) or Shoppers for meds.
    • Shower. Eat. Stay in during the snowstorm. The city is watching.
  7. Order in

    October 9, 2026

    • Jollof from Scarborough, jerk from Eglinton West, shawarma from Lawrence, dim sum from Markham, patties from Warden station. Fourteen dishes, four apps, delivered wherever you are in the city.
    • Fees surge in a snowstorm or after a Raptors win. Late night costs extra. The courier is always 'nearby'.
    • Tips go to a real player working as an Uber Eats courier if one's online. Get a job, get tipped.
  8. Hire someone you actually know

    October 9, 2026

    • Hustle now lets you hire a specific player directly. Pay sits in escrow while they decide; two days of silence and it comes back.
    • New category: Legal help. Hire a sharp Torontonian and they show up as your counsel at Old City Hall for the next 24 hours.
  9. The Forbes list

    October 9, 2026

    • Net worth now counts what you own: cars, yachts, jets, businesses, land, chips. Minus what you owe. Buying a Rolls no longer makes the game think you got poorer.
    • Fortune tiers follow the real number. A podium for the top three is on its way.
  10. Chips down

    October 9, 2026

    • Woodbine, Pickering and Fallsview now run on chips. Buy at the cage, play slots, blackjack, red/black roulette, poker or the VIP baccarat room behind the velvet rope.
    • The province takes 10% of VIP wins and of big cash-outs. Sixty hands a night, then the floor manager walks you out.
    • Woodbine Nightly: every night at 10, the floor's biggest winner takes a cut of what everyone else lost.
  11. Relatives

    October 9, 2026

    • Claim other players as your sibling, cousin, parent, auntie or grandma. They have to say yes. Up to eight.
    • Host Sunday dinner at home once a week with two or more relatives: everyone leaves fed and in a better mood. Someone will ask when you're buying a house.
  12. See you in court

    October 9, 2026

    • Got a ticket? Fight it at Old City Hall. Represent yourself, take the free duty counsel, or pay a Bay Street lawyer who bills in six-minute increments.
    • Your odds come from intelligence and charisma. Lose, and the city adds court costs. Win, and the whole street hears about it.
  13. Your brand, in everyone's pocket

    October 9, 2026

    • Businesses can now sponsor an app tile on every player's in-game Phone. Book it at /advertise; it goes live the moment you pay.
  14. Real jobs have schedules

    October 9, 2026

    • Get hired today, start tomorrow at 6am. Orientation is implied.
    • Pick your work days (3 to 6 a week). Show up on each one and the streak builds; finish a full scheduled week and that shift pays +25%.
    • Miss a scheduled day and HR notices. Three no-shows and you're let go, with a very polite calendar invite. Away from the city for a few days? Grace applies.
  15. Night school

    October 9, 2026

    • Twelve short courses across the city: U of T continuing studies, the Chang School, George Brown culinary, Humber trades, Seneca cyber, York real estate, Second City improv, Red Cross first aid, a free one at the Reference Library, and a Street MBA out of a Scarborough barbershop.
    • Five lessons each, two a day, 45 minutes apart. There's a quiz. You can fail it.
    • Every certificate adds a little to every shift forever, up to +15%. Degrees still exist for the big leap.
  16. Assurance

    October 9, 2026

    • Three optional policies: Tenant & Home with Intact (pays your rent instead of eviction, once a month), Health Plus with Sun Life (clinics 80% off), Possessions with TD (pickpockets refunded).
    • Premiums reprice every week on what the city is doing. Snowstorm? Home cover goes up. Raptors parade? Hold your wallet, and your premium.
    • Homeowners now keep paying vehicle insurance. The free ride was a bug, not a perk.
  17. Hustle: the gig board

    October 9, 2026

    • Post a job or take one: snow shovelling, moving, private cook, DJ, photographer, tutor, driver, bodyguard, decorator, trades, pet care, street team. Twelve ways to get paid by other Torontonians.
    • Pay goes into escrow when the job is posted and releases when the poster approves (or automatically after 48 hours). The board keeps 10%.
    • Stars become Hustle rep: Reliable, Trusted, Top Hustler, Legend of the 6ix. Rep shows on your profile.
  18. Staff & buying your home

    October 9, 2026

    • Hire household staff: a cleaner, private chef, driver, security, executive assistant, trainer, stylist or nanny. Wages come off weekly with rent; each one changes how the city treats you.
    • Buy the place you rent outright. No more rent, ever. Toronto math applies.
    • Street encounters, luxury status, and the Fortune tiers now talk to each other.
  19. The money-glitch patch

    October 9, 2026

    • Closed a duplication trick: firing two actions at once could leave you with the condo AND the cash. Balances now update atomically, like a real bank (not like your cousin's crypto app).
    • Shifts, quests, story missions, investments, top-ups and business payouts can only pay out once, however fast you tap.
    • Boutique sales, land deals, e-transfers and family-bank withdrawals settle safely even when the whole household hits the button at once.
  20. Fortune & story missions

    October 8, 2026

    • Status (Clout) and Fortune tiers: Comfortable → Rich → Very Rich → Dynasty. Rich tiers pay weekly lifestyle costs; high status gets you comped.
    • Story missions: a 'make it' script for new arrivals (Presto, first paycheque, off the couch, seven figures) and a 'keep it' script once you're rich (the family office, be seen, a car that says something, dirt is forever).
    • Deadlines, penalties and rewards; missions auto-progress from everything you do.
    • Login now accepts your @handle. Street encounters while travelling. Great and rough nights at venues.
  21. Households & boutiques

    October 8, 2026

    • Found a household: pooled family bank, invites, reputation leaderboard, +2% wages per member, inheritance.
    • Open a boutique in Kensington, Queen West, Stackt, the Eaton Centre, Yorkdale or Yorkville and sell Toronto fashion to other players (13% HST, obviously).
    • Wardrobe: wear what you buy. Canada Goose, OVO, Roots, a gold agbada from a Scarborough tailor.
  22. Daily quests, stickers & gifts

    October 8, 2026

    • Three daily quests dealt at midnight Toronto time. Claim cash + XP in Phone → Quests.
    • 16 Toronto stickers in chat (🚇😩 forever). Send gifts: Timbits to Leafs playoff tickets.
    • The Rivoli pool hall opened upstairs on Queen West.
  23. Big Toronto

    October 8, 2026

    • 383 places across 16 cities: all of Toronto, the GTA, Hamilton, Niagara, KW, London, Kingston, Ottawa, Muskoka, Windsor, Thunder Bay.
    • Travel by GO, VIA, bus, the 401, Porter, Air Canada, helicopter or your own jet. Leave from Union, Pearson or Billy Bishop.
    • 50 careers at real employers with 5 promotion levels. Degrees from U of T, TMU, York, Humber, George Brown.
    • 24 vehicles from a 2009 Civic to a Global 7500. Yachts at Harbourfront. Yacht parties off the Islands.
    • Passive businesses (hot dog cart → 1% of MLSE), 130 land plots, Daily Loonie Hunt, top-up packs, venue hours, taxes.
    • Player homes on the map. Rotating digital boards and airport ads, live the moment you pay.
  24. Toronto Life launches

    October 8, 2026

    • Birth lottery: Rosedale Baby, Condo Kid, or Pearson Arrival.
    • Six needs, homes with weekly rent, jobs and shifts, venue chat, friends, dating, marriage at City Hall.
    • Weekly mayoral election with real policies. Line 1 shutdowns, snowstorms, Raptors wins.
    • Billboards, lake plots and the Gardiner banner for real Toronto businesses.
